Before the city wakes, our sanctuary is already alive with gentle sounds — tails thumping, paws padding, and the soft chirps of birds outside the windows. This is the daily rhythm of Hope by Uswa's animal sanctuary, a place where rescued dogs, cats, and other animals find not just shelter, but a structured, loving environment that helps them heal. Today, we're taking you inside a typical day to show the heart and hard work that powers our mission.
Located on the outskirts of Lahore, our sanctuary currently houses over 80 animals — each with a unique story of survival. From the moment the sun peeks over the horizon, a dedicated team of caretakers, vets, and volunteers springs into action. The routine is precise, but it's filled with moments of pure joy.
5:30 AM — Dawn Chorus & First Checks
The day begins with the overnight staff doing their final rounds before the morning team arrives. They check on the critical care patients — animals recovering from surgery or battling illness — making sure heating pads are warm and IV drips are flowing. In the puppy and kitten nursery, tiny orphans are bottle-fed on schedule every two to three hours.
By 6:00 AM, the air fills with the sound of enthusiastic barking and meowing. The animals know what's coming: breakfast. Our kitchen team has been working since early morning, preparing specialized meals — high-protein kibble for malnourished adults, easily digestible food for sensitive stomachs, and warm milk formula for the youngest rescues. No two diets are the same, and each animal is fed according to its specific health plan.
8:00 AM — Medical Rounds & Treatments
After breakfast, the veterinary team takes over. Dr. Ayesha Khan and her assistants conduct a full head-to-tail check of every animal in the medical ward. Wounds are cleaned, bandages changed, medications administered, and physiotherapy sessions begin. For animals like Max (you read his story recently), these sessions are the key to regaining mobility and trust.
The sanctuary also has a dedicated quarantine area for new arrivals. Every rescued animal spends at least 10 days in isolation to prevent the spread of diseases and to allow for thorough health assessments. This morning, a newly rescued cat with a respiratory infection is receiving nebulization treatment — one of many gentle routines that help fragile animals recover without stress.
11:00 AM — Enrichment & Socialization
Once medical needs are addressed, it's time for the most joyful part of the day: play and socialization. Volunteers walk dogs in small groups through our secure paddocks, throw balls, and offer belly rubs. Cats lounge in sunny spots or chase feathered toys. The activity isn't just for fun — it's vital for mental health. Many of our animals arrived traumatized; learning to play again is a huge milestone.
Meanwhile, the sanitation team is hard at work. Kennels are scrubbed, bedding replaced, and water bowls refilled. A clean environment is critical to preventing disease, and our team takes immense pride in maintaining a spotless facility.
2:00 PM — Afternoon Rest & Adoptions
After lunch, the sanctuary settles into a quieter rhythm. The animals nap under shady trees or in their cozy kennels, recharging after a busy morning. The adoption team uses this time to process applications, conduct virtual home checks, and coordinate meet-and-greet appointments with prospective families.
Today, a lovely couple is visiting to meet a senior dog named Buddy. The sanctuary staff carefully oversees the interaction, ensuring it's a good match for both the animal and the adopters. When the couple decides to adopt, there are happy tears all around — another life transformed.
6:00 PM — Evening Routine & Lights Out
Dinner is served, followed by a final round of medications and evening walks. The caretakers spend extra time with the shy animals, offering quiet reassurance. As dusk falls, the overnight team takes over, settling everyone in for the night. Soft music plays in the kennel areas — a small gesture that helps soothe anxiety.
By 9:00 PM, the sanctuary is quiet. The animals sleep, dreaming of their new lives ahead, while the dedicated night staff remain vigilant, ready to respond to any emergency.
